Common challenge: low fats

Protein and ketone relationship

As you start measuring ketones, one common culprit that may cause them to be low despite low carbohydrate intake is not having enough fats.

If you are consuming low volumes of fat, your body will use the protein you eat and turn it into glucose, called gluconeogenesis. We'll learn more details about gluconeogenesis and fats in future lessons.

For now, don't try to do a low carb diet that is also low fat. Focus on whole foods and good quality fats (avocados, coconut/coconut oil, butter, etc.) with adequate protein, and nutritionally-dense vegetables!
