Ketones and anxiety

If you're suffering from anxiety, it's possible that you are getting too much "go" (glutamate) and too little "brake" (GABA). Luckily, studies suggest ketones can shift this glutamate/GABA balance in a calming direction by increasing GABA in your brain:

  • Using ketones as fuel may free up glutamate to be turned into GABA, increasing the "brake" signal.
  • Ketones can directly boost GABA relative to glutamate.
  • Higher GABA / lower glutamate tone is linked to less anxiety. GABA-boosting medications are well-known anti-anxiety drugs, and reviews of ketogenic diets suggest keto may reduce anxiety in some people by nudging the brain toward more GABA and less excess glutamate.
