Hydration & Salt

Hydration and salt

Drink Up and Get Your Salt

When you are in nutritional ketosis, your body doesn't hold onto as much water as on a high-carb diet. Glycogen (how your body stores carbs) acts like a sponge, soaking up several grams of water per gram of carb stored. Without those stores, your baseline fluid levels are naturally lower.

Don't forget to hydrate well before and after exercise. Have some salty food a half hour before exercising or exerting yourself in the heat. Drink 1–2 cups of water 5 minutes before starting. Recommended fluids: water, broth, herbal teas, and even coffee in moderation.
